這裡的hundres of是計量用的片語
表"數以百計"
其語意目的是用來指非特定的東西的數量
強調的是"多"
例如hundreds of sheep是指數以百計的羊==>很多羊
而非用來表示一群羊中的幾百隻==>有限定意味
因此在非限定目的的語意中
其後不加定冠詞the


但在很多和數量相關的of用法中
the卻是必須的
端視語意而定

舉例來說，這堆蘋果中的五個壞了
就會說成: Five of the apples are rotten.
這裡有強調是特定群體中的五個，固要加the

簡易的判定法：

你可以把
tens of
hundreds of
thousands of
等，當成是用來直接修釋名詞數量的數字
例如當我們說五顆蘋果時
會說5 apples而非5 the apples
此時hundreds of apples中的"hundreds of"便等於5 apples中的"5"
都只是單純的數量
且是當形容詞用


但在 5 of the apples are rotten.一句中的5
卻是當名詞用，而非形容詞
且語意中有限定意味
