問句中的would

常在口語的問句中聽到would這個字
但一直沒辦法掌握住意思
比如說:
1.
問別人自己表現的如何:
What would you think?
2.
搞不懂怎麼會發生這種事:
How would that happen?

不知道would在句中的作用為何?
是想表達如何的語意?

What would you think?

Your question does NOT mean what you wrote in Chinese, at least not without
any context.

If you ask others how you did, your question would be "What do you think?"
No *would* is involved at all. (About what is implied) Or more explicit,
"How do you think I did?"

"What *would* you think?" is more like a hypothetical question.

"If you were me, what would you think?"
如果你是我﹐你將會想什麼﹖

Again, would => will, and your Chinese and English does NOT translate into
each other.

The proper English translation of the Chinese expression is "How could that
have happened?" or "How could that happen?"

Again, "how *would* that happen" is more of a hypothetical question.
Remember, WILL, so

"I don't understand your scenario. How would that happen?"
我不了解你的想定。那怎樣將發生﹖
