In the past, the horses were the principal means of transportation.
^^^請問這裡一定要是複數?
方便的話請幫小弟做個解釋,真的需要了解為何這裡非得用複數.

Hi,
這裡的"means"的意思是指工具。means本身就是名詞，單複數同型。
我想你也可用 this is a principal means of transportation這樣的句子。
